Just read somewhere that soldiers of the NKVD Internal Troops had to do a minimum of two years service in the RKKA before they could be accepted into the NKVD. Is this true?

This is not true, the NKVD units staffed the same way as the RKKA ones, but with more exacting selection.

Thanks again - I thought it seemed like a strange idea! Another question is with regards to the wearing of Furazhkas - was it usual to see enlisted soldiers (radavoi, yefreitors) wearing them during a normal working day? I'm guessing that in combat situations, they'd wear a pilotka or field furashka.

| Yes, especially in peacetime.

One last question on hats! What did women in the NKVD wear for head gear? Was it just a dark blue beret or pilotka?

Beret was a regulation headgear, but pilotka was often worn.

What a beautiful girl! One member in our group has a huge collection of original GPW photographs, and when going through them we always wonder (and indeed hope) if the people in them survived the war.
